送别

“Songbie”(Chinese 送别, “Farewell Song”), is a song by Chinese artist Li Shutong. Li arranged the lyrics to the melody of the mid-19th century song “Dreaming of Home and Mother” by American composer John P. Ordway.  Li Shu Tong (1880-1942) is a famous Chinese painter, poet, calligrapher and musician (his most famous Chinese song is called “送别” which means “Farewell”.  In his later life, he became a very famous monk known as “Hong Yi Fa Shi.”    He learned calligraphy by writing Wei style mostly in the style of Zhang Meng Long.  After he became a monk, his calligraphy changed and he seldom wrote in the Wei style.  When Li Shu Tong was teaching music at Hang Zhou Number 1 Middle School in the 1920s, he wrote the above calligraphy work for my great-grandfather, Wu Jen Fei.  At that time, he was living at my great-grandfather’s house.  This is one of the calligraphy works that he gave to my great-grandfather.  On the painting, he wrote one of his pen names which is Li Ying.  My great-grandfather was also a big fan of Wei style.
