Li Shu Tong (1880-1942) is a famous Chinese painter, poet, calligrapher and musician (his most famous Chinese song is called “送别” which means “Farewell”. In his later life, he became a very famous monk known as “Hong Yi Fa Shi.” He learned calligraphy by writing Wei style mostly in the style of Zhang Meng Long. After he became a monk, his calligraphy changed and he seldom wrote in the Wei style. When Li Shu Tong was teaching music at Hang Zhou Number 1 Middle School in the 1920s, he wrote the above calligraphy work for my great-grandfather, Wu Jen Fei. At that time, he was living at my great-grandfather’s house. This is one of the calligraphy works that he gave to my great-grandfather. On the painting, he wrote one of his pen names which is Li Ying. My great-grandfather was also a big fan of Wei style.
This set of calligraphy was written by my great grandfather, 吴剑飞, “Wu Jian Fei” during the 1920s. As you can see he really loves Zhang Meng Long style of writing and he has learned from Li Shu Tong.
